Everything You Need to Know About Pool Filters
We offer a variety of cartridge and sand filters. In general, we recommend a 150 Sq. Ft.
Cartridge Filter for In Ground pools. For Above Ground pools we suggest a 100 Sq. Ft.
Cartridge Filter for larger pools (10,000 Gallons and above) or a 75 Sq. Ft. Cartridge Filter
for smaller pools.
Sand Filters are perfect for above ground pools and fish ponds. Cartridge filters are also capable of cleaning above ground pools and fish ponds. Either product will get
the job done and whichever one you choose is a matter of personal preference. A Cartridge Filter, filters smaller particles out of the water than sand.
Sand Filters are not as efficient at removing small particles but they don't require filter
cleaning or replacement as often so may be more cost effective over the years.

Sand Filters
Sand filters, although not as efficient as cartridge filters, are the least expensive out of
all other pool filters. Sand filters use a large mass of sand to collect and trap dirt as dirty
water runs though the sand.
Sand filters are capable of filtering out dirt particles 20 to 25 microns in size. Although
they are efficient enough to keep most pools clean, they are usually used for ponds. Pool bargains

Cartridge Filters
Cartridge filters are tanks that use polyester cartridges to filter out small particles of dirt.
These filters can trap particles as small as 5 to 10 microns in size (dirt impossible to see
with the naked eye).
Cartridge filters are easy to maintain. Dirt remains in the cartridge until you are ready to
replace it or wash it away. The cartridges can be soaked in cleaning solution or rinsed off to
wash away some of the larger particles of dirt. Replacement of the cartridge is recommended at
least once every swim season.

When should a cartridge element be cleaned?
For swimming pools, clean the cartridge when filter canister pressure reaches 8 PSI above the initial system or new cartridge starting pressure. For spas, establish a routine cartridge cleaning schedule based on the amount of spa usage.
What is the procedure to clean my cartridge?
- Remove the cartridge from the filter housing following the manufacturers's instructions.
- Use a garden hose with a straight flow nozzle to wash down the filter element. Work from the top down, holding the nozzle at a 45 degree angle, and wash all the pleats with emphasis between the pleats.
- Rinse until all dirt and debis are gone.
- For all spa cartridges and elements used in swimming pools where perspiration, suntan lotions, and other oils are present, soak the element for at least one hour (overnight is most effecitive) in (1) a commercial filter cleaner; OR (2) one cup trisodium phosphate (TSP) to five gallons water; OR (3) one cup diswasher detergent to five gallons of water.
- Rinse the cartridge again to remove oils and cleaning solution.
- If the filter has a coating of algae, calcium carbonate (residue from calcium hyphchlorte), iron, or other minerals, soak the cartridge in a solution of one part muriatic acid to twenty parts water until all bubbling stops.
WARNING: Failure to remove all oils and cleaning solution before acid soaking will result in a permanent restriction of water flow and cause premature cartridge failure.
- Rinse the cartridge clean and reassemble housing.
NOTE: Wear rubber gloves and safety galsses when using acid and chlorine. Do not add water to acid. Always add acid to water. Do not mix chlorine and acid.
